In case you wondered where I was all week (ie, in case you noticed this site was down)... my apologies. I figured the internets could live without me for a while though!
I find myself this evening in the town of Baddeck, on Cape Breton Island. I'm on a 4-day road trip adventure with my mother and sister, which started yesterday evening. Today we drove from Halifax to Baddeck, and tomorrow we are going to conquer the Cabot Trail.
Highlight of today was when we rolled into Baddeck, and I spotted a sign for a yarn store called Baadeck Yarns. We pulled up only to discover that... it had closed five minutes ago! And there was no one in sight. A look in the windows was enough to tell me I was facing a serious tragedy, but what could I do?
Well, enter my bold little sister, who is not afraid to ask for what she wants. "Well, I bet the owner lives in that house," she said. "We'll just go ask her if we can go in."
I protested, but she insisted. "What do we have to lose?" she asked. "The worst she can say is no! I'm sure she'd love our business." So we walked up to the house, and Emma waved at the person inside.
An older gentleman came to the door.
"Do I look like a yarn lady?" he said. "No, but you might be related to one!" I replied. Emma chimed in to tell him about my yarn and knitting obsession. "Well, my wife's in Toronto at a trade show," he said. "But I'll get the keys and let you in if you like."
And he let us browse for as long as we wanted, and even found us a great hotel in town. He was very friendly and we had a great chat! And in return, and because it was truly a wonderful yarn store, we spent $135. (No, it wasn't all for me. It was for my grandmother and my best friend and my sister and also some sock yarn for me. And besides much of it was local, which makes it better. :))
We're still in the shoulder season here in Cape Breton, which means cheap accommodations, but slim pickings in the restaurant department. Dinner was highly disappointing... but not enough to dampen my yarn happiness. :)
Time for bed... we're getting an early start on the 300km of Cabot Trail.

Yarn Tales
Tue, 2007-05-08 21:08 — Patricia (not verified)Cape Breton sounds cool, I hope I get to see it one day too.
I like your yarn story.
Ironically enough something like that happened to me in Vancouver at the yarn/knitting store on 4th street (across from the safeway). I decided that I should start knitting and found a great beginner's pattern on the Martha Stewart website. I knew there was a yarn store on 4th (I don't know it's name but for some reason it doesn't have a sign outside) so I went down on a Sunday only to discover that it was closed! That was a let down... So I went in the next door store that sold old knicknacks. I noticed on a previous day that the 2 stores were connected so I figuired they would know when they were open. The saleslady had a key! So she unlocked next door let me in and she found & sold to me the needles and yarn I needed. It felt kinda funny being in a closed store on a Sunday but it was kindof an adventure. :-)
