Sustainability Marketplace - This Weekend

This coming weekend is probably the most exciting part of the 30 Days of Sustainability - The Sustainability and You Marketplace. (It's also my birthday on Sunday. *cough*)

For the three days, UBC Robson Square will be awash in cool stuff to do, watch, and listen to. Spoken word, music, a demonstration on how to recycle vintage sweaters into fabulous fashions, workshops on greening your home renovations... and lots of cool peeps, I'm sure. Probably even me. :)

FYI, if you are a photo-geek, please take lots of pictures, and upload the good ones to Flickr, as per the directions on this page. I'd love to see more images in the gallery!

30 Days of Sustainability - Launched!

You may remember that a few weeks ago I attended a breakfast introducing the 30 Days of Sustianability Project, and mentioned that there were plans to launch an interactive website on the Bryght platform.

Well, as it turns out, I ended up being hired to help manage the site during the 30 Days. We launched it today - phew!

Special features of the website include:

  • a comprehensive event calendar, listing the dozens of workshops, sustainability cafes, speakers, and so much more taking place through the 30 Days;
  • a collection of photographs that will be taken by attendees at events all month;
  • A What's New section that lists all of the news updates;
  • an interactive 30 Questions section, where a new question will be posted each day, and the public will have the chance, along with our panel of sustainability experts, to discuss actionable things we can do to advance sustainability.

I'll be keeping an eye on it all month, moderating discussion, posting the new question each day, and generally helping out. I'm really hoping to see it get used to its full potential.

If you live in the Vancouver area, be sure to check out the event listings, and go check out a few things that sound interesting. Some of the philosopher cafe topics sound great to me. And if you can, take photos and post them to the Flickr group!

Perhaps most importantly to me, please check out the questions of the day, and leave your thoughts. Pass the link along to your friends, too... the more comments, the merrier!

30 Days of Sustainability Breakfast

This morning I went to a "Sustainability Breakfast" hosted by Alcan, to inform the community about the upcoming 30 Days of Sustainability.

The 30 Days - "30 Days That Will Change the World" - are happening in Vancouver during the month of March. There's a whole ton of stuff going on every day, and the vision is pretty big. I hope it totally takes off and establishes Vancouver even more firmly on the path of being a world leader in this arena.

It was fun to see such a big cross-section of folks in the room - it was packed, and full of people that I know from lots of different "circles" in my life. I like when the circles start to overlap!

Not to be critical of a well-intentioned and exciting intiative, but I have to say that I'm kind of disappointed in the web strategy (or more specifically, the timing on it). They've got Raincity Studios working on what will be a kick-ass, dynamic Bryght site, but it's not going to be launched until the end of February. Which is a little late, I'd argue. If the 30 Days people do a good job with marketing and promotion, they'll have people on Google all month trying to find information about what's going on... without an informative site to visit. Darn.

About this Site

A hodge-podge of random thoughts, musings, and links – sometimes about social change, sometimes about technology and the web, sometimes about yoga, and occasionally about knitting. Sometimes (because I'm a Canadian girl with deep roots in the British Isles) I even write about the weather.

I'm a yoga teacher, founder of Yoga for Geeks, and a freelance web writer, strategist, and project manager. I also help to co-create the amazing Web of Change Conference, every September in beautiful British Columbia.
