Random, Bizarre, and Likely Irrelevant

I'm a Canadian and I have a weird fascination with the weather, I know. But doesn't anyone else think this is interesting??

Calgary Int'l Airport

Highest Temperature (1881-2006) 22.8°C (1975)
Lowest Temperature (1881-2006) -22.8°C (2003)
Greatest Precipitation (1881-2006) 28.2mm (1945)

(I'm in Montreal right now, and it's been a beautiful sunny day, around 10ºC. Which, according to the Environment Canada Weather Office, is very typical for this time of year. I am totally loving this city, but I am really not sure I could stand the winters...)

Weather Winners

Canadians are said to be obsessed with the weather. We talk about it – and complain about it – a lot. I am definitely guilty of this, truth be told. In fact, around this time of year, I get a bit ridiculous as I start obsessing about how much I hate the endless grey of a Vancouver winter.

So while I was looking for stats to back up my Vancouver winter whining, I found this neat little thing that Environment Canada did. It ranks all Canadian cities based on a whole bunch of different weather categories. Most sun in summer? Most sun in winter? Most rain year round? Worst wind chill? Etc. The results are based on 30 years of recent weather data for Canada's 100 largest cities (many of which I've never even heard of).

As it turns out, Vancouver is pretty bad for winter grey... but not the worst. Looks like Prince Rupert and Chilliwack would render me suicidal.

Victoria wins for mildest winter (smart retirement choice, Mum and Dad). And the winter sunshine winner? Calgary. Too bad I can't imagine ever living there again...
