workspace at 7am - by kris krugI have been meaning to write this post for weeks. So here it is... my post devoted to my love for WorkSpace. Read on and I'll tell you all about it!

WorkSpace opened up about three months ago now. (Where has the time gone?!) Things have just gotten better by the day around here! Thanks to the hard work of Bill, Dane and Kristin (and we miss you, Eric), this place has totally taken off and become a total community hub in Vancouver's Gastown.

Top Ten (plus one) Reasons to Love WorkSpace

  1. Home offices are lonely and boring and usually have no view – unlike WorkSpace.
  2. The coffee is amazing – and I hear you can even get mochas now, if you want. Sometimes I even pretend I'm a Starbucks customer and order a "half-caf, 2%, extra-hot latte". You can too!
  3. They will be getting all their supplies from FrogFile soon, meaning that all the paper and the bathroom stuff and the cleaning supplies will be eco-friendly. This right here makes me want to weep tears of gratitude. Way to set an example, guys!
  4. There's a bike storage locker down the hall.
  5. They keep self-serve, self-pay snacks in the kitchen, I just discovered a few days ago!
  6. PHOTOBOOTH!
  7. If other people have their iTunes shared, you can listen to all this new music while you work!
  8. Six Acres is around the corner and their food is awesome, I discovered yesterday. (Maybe one of the web services members wants to trade them a website for some meals?)
  9. They'll be your mail service, if you want! They'll even book your travel!
  10. Bill and Dane and Kristin are all awesome. Two of the three of them are even growing moustaches for Movember. Don't miss it!
  11. And finally... naturally... cuz it's the home of Yoga for Geeks! What are you waiting for? Non-member drop-ins are always welcome. Come on down!

WorldChanging Book Launch in Vancouver!

The stellar folks from WorldChanging have recently released a (big and pretty) book, and they're doing a big ol' tour across North America to promote it. Carbon-offset, I'm sure. ;)

Lucky for me, the Vancouver event is the day after I get back from my two weeks on the road – November 5th, 2006. It's being held at WorkSpace and promises to be a great time. So if you live in the city, come on out and play!

November 5th
6:00-8:30, party afterwards
WorkSpace: 400 – 21 Water St.

Yoga at WorkSpace Starts This Week!

You might remember that a while back I blogged about WorkSpace – the awesome membership-based office space getting ready to open in Gastown. Well, WorkSpace is now open, and it's beautiful, and yoga classes – taught by yours truly – begin on Tuesday!

From the Workspace website:

Starting Tuesday, September 5, 2006, WorkSpace will be offering twice a week yoga classes in the space. Check out the schedule here.

Taught by WorkSpace friend and member Sarah Pullman, these classes are open to any and all WorkSpace members, regardless of experience or ability. Until further notice, friends of WorkSpace members are also welcome for a nominal fee (see pricing).

Classes will run for 1 hour and 15 minutes – long enough to stretch our your body, deepen your breathing, check in with the sore spots resulting from too many hours spent bent over your laptop at WorkSpace, and then relax deeply.

Please come a few minutes early for your first class, and inform the instructor of any concerns or injuries you have.

Equipment is provided, though you are welcome to bring your own mat if you'd prefer. Wear comfortable clothes, but don't sweat it – this is a low-fashion yoga scene.

Questions? You can email Sarah at info@yogaforgeeks.com.

Namaste!

Workspace - with Yoga?

I had a great meeting on Friday with Bill MacEwen, mastermind behind Vancouver's Workspace, a fabulous concept in workspace sharing set for launch July 1st. Bill at Workspace - photo by Kris Krug

What is this Workspace all about? Well, if you're one of those people who does most of your work as an independent, and works primarily from home, or at cafes, then Workspace is for you. Bill is renovating a big bright 4th floor space in Gastown (that picture to the right will click you through to a great set of photos by the talented Kris Krug) with a fabulous view of the North Shore. Members will pay monthly for access - half-day, full-day, or evenings. Click here to watch a lil' videoblog about the idea. There will be dedicated meeting rooms available for booking (no more having to meet with clients at cafes or at their office!), wifi (of course), a cafe (for in-house caffeination), and...tentatively... yoga. !!!

Bill and I discussed the possibility of me teaching twice a week in the space (which is going to be gorgeous). Classes would likely be included with membership, though details are still TBD. My aim, assuming this all works out, would be to offer accessible, non-intimidating classes, with lots of focus on the breath, exploring body awareness, and relaxation. Brand new beginners would definitely be welcome - nay, encouraged!

I'm super-stoked about Workspace and how awesome it looks like it's going to be. I'm also extremely excited about this possibility of sharing a practice that has made so much difference in my life with more people. I'm not sure what the "typical Workspace member" will be, or even if there will be one, and it won't necessarily be your average "geek" - but I do know that just about every hard-working, computer-using person I know would benefit from some time spent stretching, breathing, and being present in the body instead of racing around in the mind.

Watch this space for more information as the summer approaches! And keep an eye on Bill's blog - he'll be launching a fancy new site for Workspace soon. Contact him if you're interested in getting in the door early.

About this Site

A hodge-podge of random thoughts, musings, and links – sometimes about social change, sometimes about technology and the web, sometimes about yoga, and occasionally about knitting. Sometimes (because I'm a Canadian girl with deep roots in the British Isles) I even write about the weather.

I'm a yoga teacher, founder of Yoga for Geeks, and a freelance web writer, strategist, and project manager. I also help to co-create the amazing Web of Change Conference, every September in beautiful British Columbia.
